RAINBOW RIOTS OPENED UGANDA’S FIRST LGBT+ COMMUNITY CENTRE

In Uganda it’s illegal to be gay. LGBT people risk being arrested or becoming victims of violence. They have no safe space. Rainbow Riots is on a mission to change this.

Thanks to donations from private individuals around the world and a fundraising campaign run by Rainbow Riots and global organisation All Out, in 2019 we opened Uganda’s first LGBT community centre, in Kampala. The centre, which ran for a year, was a safe space to welcome the Ugandan LGBT community. It also offered advice and a diverse range of recreation programmes and services including arts, cultural activities and community gatherings.

Rainbow Riots founder and director, Swedish artist and activist Petter Wallenberg said:

“In spite of the challenges, we succeeded in opening the first LGBT community centre in Uganda. Big thanks to everyone around the world who helped to helped make this milestone happen. Without you it wouldn’t have been possible.”
