07 Oct Creative workshops in Uganda!
As part of our LGBT youth programme “New Rainbows” we have organised a series of creative workshops with young LGBT people in Uganda, where same sex relations are illegal. In these workshops we worked with choreographers, recording studios and camera crews, letting young LGBT community members express themselves through singing and dancing, as part of a real music release – the new Rainbow Riots song “We Don’t Care“.
We want to empower and encourage young LGBT people to share their talents and get their voices heard. Most of the participants in Uganda had never before got a chance to record a song, so there was a lot of excitement and engagement. When the song and music video was released worldwide in July, it brought a sense of pride to an otherwise marginalized community. It showed the world that despite the criminalization of who we are, we can still thrive and sing along together.
As one of the Ugandan participants said: “It was amazing to see myself in the music video, I actually screamed in disbelief! I was happy because the work was more than what I expected. In a moment, I was the voice and face for the voiceless.“
