31 Mar Support LGBT people in Uganda!
A message to the world from Rainbow Riots Uganda:
Uganda’s parliament has proposed a horrifying new law that criminalises even identifying as LGBT. Anyone convicted of “aggravated homosexuality” – could face the death penalty. This is one of the toughest pieces of anti-gay legislation in Africa.
Rainbow Riots Uganda want to see respect for all humans, regardless of sexuality and gender identity. This is our right as human beings.
We have read and listened to a lot of social media rhetoric on ‘who’ LGBT people are. They say we are evil and satanic. That we are sick, perverted child molesters. But we disagree, because we know who we are and who our friends in the LGBT community are.
We belong to a community that is vibrant, caring and supportive. A community full of talented individuals and lovely human beings that share the same dreams of love and happiness as everyone else. We are your brothers, sisters, your children and neighbours and we don’t ask for anything more than to live in peace. This is why hate and misinformation, often supported by religious beliefs, hurts so badly. We are not evil. We are human beings, like you.
The ‘Anti-Homosexuality Bill, 2023’ bill attacks the human rights of LGBT people to be we are and love who we love without discrimination. All the fundamental human rights will be taken off LGBT people, like the right to education, health and to a life without fear. However, the Bill is still awaiting the president’s signature. It can still be stopped.
Please support the Ugandan LGBT community in the fight against this dangerous bill.
Together, we can work towards a world with love, dignity, and equality for all human beings.
